Does free trade work? (event 1)

http://economyincrisis.org/content/free-trade-benefits-few This story argues that free trade is detrimental. To show this the consequences of NAFTA (North American free trade agreement) were looked at. This agreement caused massive job loss in both Mexico and the U.S. and only benefited the large corporations. These are some good points, but in the article the advantages of specialization are not shown. The people and resources that were working on corn production in Mexico can now be used for something else allowing more progress.

Obama's report card (question 3)

Health Care (B)- Obama is making health care an integral part of his 2012 campaign by trying to force a Supreme Court review. If the Supreme Court supports the health care bill it will be fuel for the Obama campaign, but if the decision goes the other way it will assist the republican campaign. Health care is a good point for Obama to emphasize because it is very easy to make affordable health care look good. It is a high risk, high reward move.

Economic Downturn(D)- In this situation Obama is relatively helpless. He is making no risky moves, simply giving patriotic speeches about the great working force of America. A falling economy with no major response is a definite way for a president to lose an election.

War on Terror(C)- The American public has forgotten the War on Terror. Along with this Obama has made hardly any decisions with it. The fact that it is still being dragged on despite what Obama promised, which could come back to haunt him during this campaign. The Obama campaign will be ignoring it, so now Republican's are in control of whether or not the War on Terror becomes a major issue in the next campaign. If it is this will hurt Obama.

Re-election bid(D)- With the failing economy and Obama not meeting the miraculous change people were expecting he has very little support. The democratic party would have much better chances with a new candidate because people once again want change and Obama no longer represents change.
